History in the Making

This week the 116th congress was sworn in and it has been exciting. Democrats have taken back the House of Representatives. We still have a lot of work to do but we can't deny this huge force of progressive values. Let's breakdown this historic victory that we can celebrate together:

Nancy Pelosi takes back Speaker of the house and remains the only female speaker.

Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib: First Muslim women in Congress

Deb Haaland and Sharice Davids: First Native American women in Congress

Marsha Blackburn: Tennessee’s first female Senator

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: Youngest woman ever elected to Congress

Jahana Hayes: Connecticut’s first black Congresswoman

Ayanna Pressley: Massachusetts’ first black Congresswoman

Sylvia Garcia and Veronica Escobar: Texas’ first Latina Congresswomen

Cindy Hyde-Smith: Mississippi’s first female Senator

Kyrsten Sinema and Martha McSally: Arizona’s first female Senators

Abby Finkenauer and Cindy Axne: First women elected to the House from Iowa

This is an astounding way to start off the New Year (even though the government is still shut down.) Our voices are now in starting to be heard at the highest level. We will not be ignored. I am looking forward to following the future of this new Congress and what other barriers we can break.

To quote Michelle Obama,“There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish.”
